Win or Go Home - The Official Version
As denizens of the political blogosphere no doubt already know, a major Dem has thrown down the "win or leave" gauntlet to the President, in a formulation that echoes my post on the subject from Monday. The major Dem is 2004 Presidential contender Wesley Clark, a likely candidate in 2008 whose stock just went up a great deal as a result of staking a firm and coherent position on the war. And just to head off the anticipated line of objection, Clark is, in my experience, broadly respected in the Democratic Party and would likely have won the nomination over Kerry last year if he had either declared his candidacy earlier, or had held some kind of elected office. Hardly any Democrat has a bad thing to say about his political ideology. The doubts within the Democratic Party were over Clark's political experience and viability, vis a vis an established figure like John Kerry.
Mark A. R. Kleinman explicitly ties Clark's message to the "win or leave" meme in a great post yesterday, while Digby at Hullabaloo zeroes in on the unspoken central tenet of Clark's thesis: that Bush is unwilling or incapable of actually doing what needs to be done in Iraq, so withdrawal is the only option by default. This was captured in my piece with the parenthetical aside that of course Bush won't make this choice, so advocating for a theoretical victory scenario in contrast to immediate withdrawal is a free pass for Democrats.
