First Debate – Parting Thoughts
A few final remarks about last night’s debate.
First, reading the comment threads this morning really made me smile. The full range of opinions represented – mostly in respectful and reasoned tones – gives me hope that there’s still the possibility of conversation across the ideological divide. I am deeply impressed and humbled that people of such different views feel welcome and comfortable contributing to the discussion on this site. This is exactly what I have been trying to achieve with EA over the past two-plus years, despite my own obvious biases, and it’s good to see that the readership, while modest in size, is big where it counts. Thanks, folks.
I have been reading debate reaction on a number of sites today. I find Jay Nordlinger’s assessment at the National Review Online representative of conservative opinion, which is encouraging. From the left-center perspective, it only gets better from there. Don’t miss the DNC’s highlight reel of Bush’s squints and grimaces. It’s a low blow, but after the trashing Gore took in 2000 for a more subtle performance, this one deserves to get some play.
Many of the Friday-morning Quarterbacks are pointing to lost opportunities on both sides. I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed when Kerry didn’t exploit Bush’s bizarre and fairly lengthy objection to the International Criminal Court treaty with the obvious comeback: “Mr. President, only international criminals have anything to fear from an international court.”
It also would have been nice, on Bush’s tenth or eleventh repetition of the phrase, “It’s hard work,” to point out that Bush has spent about a third of his Presidency on vacation.
Well, there’s always the next one. And, of course, Cheney-Edwards. That should be interesting!
