Are the Gloves About to Come Off?
Last year, there was a rumor around the Web that Hustler publishers and free-speech advocate Larry Flynt had dug up some nuclear dirt on Bush during his "lost years" in Texas and Alabama in the early-1970s, indicating, perhaps, a bit of inconsistency in his opposition to Roe vs. Wade. I have been waiting patiently for this particular story to surface. I supected they would save it for a very rainy day, and if Kerry could win without it, they'd just as soon not bother, because it is sleazy in the highest degree (to the woman in question, not to Bush) even if true, and nothing short of libelous and utterly dispicable if false. Now, according to Mark Kleinman, it appears, someone has their finger on the button.
We also might learn some hard truths about the dangers of having a dry drunk in the White House, if, as Kleinman suggests, "Bush's return to drinking is apparently common knowledge in DC, though it seems unlikely anyone will talk on the record." Frankly this is more terrifying and far more relevant than a 30-year-old tale of a young couple doing something that was, should have been, and should continue to be legal, even if it speaks to a certain hypocrisy and irresponsibility.
