Not So Swift
It didn't take this pile of garbage too long to rot out from within, did it? The Boston Globe today reports that the key figure in the "Swift Boat Veterans" anti-Kerry attack squadron, Kerry's former commanding officer, has recanted his story, calling it a "terrible mistake." Further, Atrios reports that Larry Thurrow, who appeared on Inside Politics yesterday to challenge the fact that Kerry's unit took fire in an incident where he was awarded a Bronze Star, was himself awarded a Bronze Star for valor under fire at the same incident! Lewis Letson, the medical officer who charges Kerry with faking an injury to receive one of his three purple hearts (claiming "I treated him for that injury") turns out not to have signed the medical report (as reported by the New York Times). Mike Dallas, a diarist at Daily Kos, has unearthed a 1996 quote from retired Admiral Roy Hoffman, lately quoted in the SBV spot as calling Kerry "dishonest" and "lacking the capacity to lead," saying:
"As far as I was concerned, the war was won over there in that part for that period. And it was mainly won because of the bravado and the courage of the young officers that ran the boats, the SWIFT boats and the Coast Guard cutters and Senator Kerry was no exception. He was among the finest of those."
Needless to say, a few pea-brained wingers will continue to cling to this flimsy tissue of lies like a security blanket, hoping that most Americans won't let the facts get in the way of a good slander. I say, run the spot nationwide. Let people see exactly how low some will stoop - to depths where truth and honor have no meaning, as long as the right guy wins.
Meanwhile, his manhood challenged, Kerry has begun to fire back with the "Pet Goat" offensive. If people want to assert that a young naval lieutenent under fire was less brave than is claimed, I think it's only fair to look at the true face of cowardice and indecision, and start asking some extremely uncomfortable questions about the kind of leadership our President showed when the country was under fire on September 11.
