Good Call
Woke up this morning to the delightful news that John Kerry selected the best possible option for VP in John Edwards. I didn't think much about politics over the weekend, but those few cycles I did expend were mostly worries about what I could possibly write this morning to defend a choice of Gephardt or Vilsack. Fortunately, I needn't bother.
I like the Edwards choice for VP for the same reason that I liked his chances for the top job: he's articulate, likeable, energetic and emblematic of the best of the South. In the second slot, his disadvantages (youth, lack of executive experience) are less salient, and there's really nothing to be done about his career as a trial-lawyer. He puts the best possible spin on it when he talks, and I don't see trial lawyers as inherently more despicable than oil company executives in any case.
The best news for Edwards is that he makes such a startling contrast to the dour and consistently-wrong Dick Cheney. Is there anything about the Edwards pick that doesn't make the ticket stronger than any other choice? This is good news for Ds. Expect a big bounce and some real panic from our friends in the White House sometime soon.
