Crystal Gazing
Light blogging today because I actually have to earn my keep. I have been involved in a very interesting project with my client, the Borg, trying to assess the social, political and economic impact of emerging technologies on "information work" about 10 years into the future. This kind of planning lays the basis for investments and product planning, and helps the company position itself in case of changes in external conditions.
Yesterday and today, we're engaged in scenario-building, a particular method of analysis that suggests alternative futures and tries to construct specific sets of business conditions based on social trends. The session is being attended by some extremely deep thinkers - economists, sociologists, scientists, experts in various fields of technology - in addition to the Borg brain trust, which is pretty formidable in itself. Last week, they engaged in another interesting exercise, recruiting teens and young adults from around the world to solicit their views on the future. It's easily the coolest project I've ever been involved in, but it's consuming all my cycles right now, so it may be a while before the next big post.
